Warner Bros recently dropped a trailer of the fourth instalment in the matrix franchise, The Matrix Resurrections. It will be the fourth addition to the franchise.
The first movie in the instalment, The Matrix, directed by The Wachowskis was released in 1999. The matrix was way ahead of its time in terms of its story, jaw-dropping action sequences and unique camera shots. No one can forget the bullet-time slow-motion effects used in the movie. The sci-fi genre was not new before 1999, but matrix was revolutionary.
The story of The matrix is based on a dystopian future where reality, as perceived by humans, is a simulated reality created by sentient machines to subdue the human population. They use the heat and electrical activity of their body as an energy source. But some humans freed themselves from the dream world. Those who are free have formed a rebellion group against machines. The story revolves around the fight between humans and machines. Neo, played by Keanu Reeves, is a computer programmer who repeatedly encounters the phrase The Matrix online. Morpheus gives Neo to choose between red or blue pills. Neo chooses the red pill and realises the world is a simulated reality and joins the rebellions. The Oracle is a prophet who predicted The One will free humankind from machines. Morpheus, the mentor of Neo, believed Neo to be The One. Neo fights with the sentient in the dilemma of whether he is the one or not.
With a refreshing story and visual representation, The Matrix became classic. The movie made a tremendous impact on the viewers. Even some started believing the world is a simulated reality.
After the success of The Matrix, a sequel named The Matrix Reloaded, released in the year 2003. It continues the story of the first movie without disturbing the visual representation of the prior. The Wachowskis wanted to take a step ahead to make the action sequence more difficult. So after the bullet-time effect, they used a virtual camera and 3D models to achieve the action sequence.
The third instalment of the franchise is The Matrix Revolutions, released in the year 2003. While the previous two amazed the audience, the third one failed miserably. It could not give a satisfactory conclusion to the trilogy. Some critics criticised the film for being anti-climatic and less philosophically ambiguous than its previous movies.
What will be in The Matrix Resurrections?
At the end of Revolutions, the matrix rebooted and humans were given a choice to stay in the matrix or leave it, to make peace between humans and machines.
As per the trailer, The Matrix Resurrections starts after the previous events. Where Neo is leading a simple life unknown about the matrix. But he is having glimpses of his forgotten life. So he is taking the advice of a psychologist, who seems to be a sentient program, is prescribing Neo to take blue pills. We also see Neo and Trinity both can’t recognise each other. The biggest question of Neo being alive is also answered in the trailer, as we see machines treating Neo. It seems machines also need Neo to be alive.
Again we see Morpheus offers Neo to choose between the blue pill and the red pill. As we know it, Neo chooses the red pill and comes out of the matrix. We see him rising from the pod, as we saw in the first Matrix movie. Again the fight between the sentient program and Neo begins.
Who are returning and who are not?
Obviously, Keanu Reeves plays Neo. Carrie-Anne Moss returns as Trinity and Jada Pinkett Smith is back as Niobe. Daniel Bernhardt reprises his role as Agent Johnson and Lambert Wilson returns as the trafficker of information. The most disappointing news is Hugo Weaving’s Agent Smith and Laurence Fishburne’s Morpheous are not in the movie. Although, we will see a younger version of Morpheous played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
Who are new to the franchise?
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is playing Morpheus, maybe the younger version. Also, Jessica Henwick is seen as another co-lead in the movie, working with a new set of skills and artillery. Neil Patrick Harris is playing the psychologist of Neo. Priyanka Chopra seems to be the latest version of The Oracle. Jonathan Groff, Toby Onwumere, Max Riemelt, Eréndira Ibarra, Andrew Caldwell, Brian J. Smith, Ellen Hollman and Christina Ricci are the new addition to the cast of The Matrix Resurrections.
