Lionel Messi: from Atomic Flea to soccer’s GOAT

Lionel Messi is one of the greatest soccer players of all time, and after winning his first World Cup title with Argentina against France in what was one of the most epic matches FIFA has ever seen, he has been cemented in the minds of many as the greatest of all time, period. Not even Kylian Mbappé’s remarkable hattrick could deny Messi his trophy. The Argentine captain scored two goals in the final, and after extra time ended in an unbelievable 3-3 tie, his team defeated France in a 4-2 penalty shootout. This is Argentina’s third World Cup title ever, and its first since 1986. Messi has now officially won every major football trophy with Argentina, including Finalissima (2022), Copa América (2021), Beijing Olympics (2008), and FIFA World Youth Championship (2005). 

The Argentinian star had a hugely successful career in one of the world’s top soccer clubs, FC Barcelona. It’s a team he helped win over 30 titles, including four UEFA Champions Leagues. With his move to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2021, he hoped to continue his winning ways. Indeed, throughout his career the number 10 has broken multiple records and has been awarded many prestigious accolades, including Ballons d’Or,  FIFA World’s Best Player awards, and European Golden Shoes, to name a few.
