Amid a raging controversy after it released in theatres, Adipurush makers on Sunday said they will change some dialogues in the film as they have been perceived as ‘disrespecting the Ramayana’, the Hindu epic on which the film is based.
The big point: Soon after Adipurush released on Friday last week, it received widespread criticism from political parties and audiences for using “pedestrian language” for Hindu gods, especially Hanuman. Responding to the backlash, the film’s production company T-Series said on Sunday that the team has decided to make “alterations” so that it resonates with the “core essence” of the film.
What was the criticism? Actors, political groups, and audience members all criticised Adipurush, claiming that Hanuman’s discourse in the movie was very simplistic and colloquial. The most common criticisms focused on a few sentences during the “Lanka dahan” segment where Hanuman is heard using purportedly offensive language. The video had received criticism from the Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and AAP for “hurting Indian sensibilities.”
The film’s creators have stated: Adipurush’s script writer and three-time national award winner Manoj Muntashir claimed on Sunday that after writing more than 4,000 words, some people’s feelings were damaged “because of five lines.” “I can offer innumerable justifications for my dialogues, but they won’t lessen your suffering. In a statement released by him, he said, “I and the film’s producer-director have decided that some of the sentences that are hurting you will be revised.
“Team Adipurush values audience and public input and revises dialogues for a unifying film experience in consideration of popular opinion. The dialogues are being changed with the CBFC’s input and suggestions, according to a tweet from T-Series.
What’s next: According to Muntashir, the new dialogue will be inserted to the movie this week.
The blockbuster movie at a budget of Rs 600 crore is now succeeding at the box office. With actors like Ranbir Kapoor, Ram Charan, and Ananya Birla each purchasing 10,000 tickets for charity, the movie made over Rs 100 crore on Saturday and over Rs 140 crore on its opening day.
