Liam Plunkett, who won the World Cup for England, and Aaron Finch, a former captain of Australia, are two players who have signed up for Major League Cricket, a brand-new T20 competition in America.
The first edition of the competition takes place this summer in Dallas, Texas, after being pushed back a year.
Ex-Australia captain Finch – who retired from international cricket in February – is one of six overseas players, with South Africa skipper Quinton de Kock also signing up.
Finch played 254 games for Australia across all formats and led the side to their first T20 World Cup title in 2021.
The 36-year-old will team up with former England bowler Plunkett for San Francisco Unicorns.
Because his wife is American, Plunkett, who participated in England’s 2019 World Cup victory against New Zealand, is qualified to play for his country.
The six participating teams—San Francisco Unicorns, Washington Freedom, MI New York, Seattle Orcas, and Los Angeles Knight Riders—took part in the draught and selected nine US-based players in addition to six foreign signings. More players will be announced next month.
USA Cricket joined the International Cricket Council as an associate member in 2019 and aspires to be a full member by 2030.
Plunkett declared: “Going into the next part of my career, I’m happy to have the opportunity to join Major League Cricket and focus my concentration on helping to expand the sport in the United States” after electing to leave Surrey and join Major League Cricket.
I had a wonderful career with England, and now that I’ve retired from international cricket, I’m thrilled to be able to support the growth of the game in America as a player and coach.
In addition, I’m excited about having the opportunity to represent the Philadelphians in Minor League Cricket and cheering for the team that plays the closest to our residence in the US.
