Sport is an activity which involves physical skill & exertion of a team or individual. An individual or a team competes against the opponent individual or team. Sports are regulated by a set of rules and traditions. According to GAISF (Global Association of International Sports Federations), the sport must have an element of competition, it should not depend on the element of luck, the sport should not have a risk to the health & life of its participants or athletes, the sport must not harm any living creature in no way, and it should not depend on equipment provided by a single supplier.
Here are some popular sports of India described below:
Football: It is a game of two teams having 11 players on each side. Players of both teams try to move the ball into the opponent team’s goal by using any body parts except hands & arms. Only the goalkeeper can touch the ball with his hands and that too only in the penalty area. Whichever team scores more goals will win the match. Indian Super League is India’s top domestic league for football and is played to promote football in India. I-League is the second premier football league which is also known as Hero I-League. Both these leagues are governed by the All India Football Federation.
Kabaddi: It is played between two teams having 7 players on each side. In this, one team is aggressive and the other team is preservative. One by one player from the offensive team comes to the field of the preserver to defeat the preservatives. Preservatives have to catch the player coming from an offensive team one after the other. India has won 4 gold medals in four Asian Games they played.
Badminton: It is an international sport which is played using a racket by hitting a shuttlecock. Badminton is played in three formats: doubles, mixed doubles, and singles. The player scores the point by hitting the shuttlecock with the racket and land it on the opponent’s side. Singles badminton has one player on both sides of the court but doubles and mixed doubles badminton has two players on both sides of the court. In India, the governing body for badminton is the Badminton Association of India. Premier Badminton League (PBL) is India’s domestic league for badminton.
Cricket: It is a game of bat and ball which is played between two teams and each team consists of 11 players. This game is played on a circular ground and at the center, there is a 22-yard pitch having wicket on each side. This game has different formats like Twenty20, One Day, and Test cricket. Twenty20 and One Day are limited over cricket where cricketers play in the club or team colour kit. Test cricket is played over 5 days where cricketers play in white jerseys. The sport Cricket is governed by BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) and is also a full member of the ICC (International Cricket Council).
Field Hockey: It is a sport which is played between two teams where both teams try to move the ball into the opposing team’s goal. Each team consists of 10 field players and 1 goalkeeper where the player manoeuvres the ball using a hockey stick. This game is governed by the International Hockey Federation. Premier Hockey League is a domestic hockey tournament conducted by the Indian Hockey Federation. This league aims to revive the interest of the people in this sport game. After the success of the Premier Hockey League, two more leagues have decided to start: Indian Hockey Federation and World Series Hockey.
